How to Pack & Move Kitchen Appliances

Packing up your kitchen? Don’t overlook your appliances. From bulky refrigerators to delicate coffee makers, these items require a little extra prep to move safely. Follow these simple steps to protect your investment and avoid a mess on moving day.

Your kitchen appliances are some of the most valuable and delicate items in your home. From your microwave and toaster to large appliances like your refrigerator, proper packing and preparation can prevent damage and make unpacking easier. Here’s a guide to packing and moving your kitchen appliances safely and efficiently.

1. Clean Everything First

Before packing, make sure all appliances are clean and dry:

  • Remove crumbs, grease, or food residue

  • Defrost your fridge and freezer 24–48 hours in advance

  • Wipe down interiors and exteriors with a mild cleaner

2. Disconnect Safely

Unplug appliances and disconnect any water or gas lines. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions if needed, or hire a professional to handle complicated disconnections (like gas stoves).

3. Pack Small Appliances Correctly

Blenders, coffee makers, toasters, and similar items should be:

  • Wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper

  • Placed in a sturdy box with extra padding

  • Packed with cords secured and taped to the unit

  • Labeled as “Fragile”

Tip: Use the original boxes if you still have them—they’re designed for a perfect fit.

4. Prepare Large Appliances for the Move

Refrigerator: Defrost, clean, and keep doors slightly open to prevent mildew. Secure shelves or remove and pack them separately.

Stove/Oven: Clean thoroughly. If it’s gas, get professional help to disconnect it. Secure knobs and pack any loose components.

Dishwasher: Disconnect, drain excess water, and leave the door open to dry. Tape the door shut for transport.

Washer/Dryer: Drain hoses, secure the drum, and tape all cords to the back of the unit.

5. Use Moving Blankets and Straps

For large appliances, use moving blankets to protect surfaces from scratches. Secure them with straps or rope to prevent shifting during transit.

6. Load with Care

Use a dolly to move heavy appliances safely. Load them upright and make sure they’re strapped securely inside the moving truck.
